Dramatic mounds - or manmade hills – are a Krakowian speciality, and one of the things that gives the city its particular visual identity and atmosphere. The local liking of these is prehistoric in origin though are now four main examples. The Krakus Mound to the north and the Wanda Mound to the south commemorate legendary figures of the eighth century. The other big two, the Kosciuszko and Pilsudski Mounds, are of much more recent vintage and commemorate the two outstanding figures of modern Polish history. You are strongly advised to visit at least one of these, as it’s probably true to say that no visit to Krakow is fully complete otherwise.
